Santacon, costumed Santa Clauses has ballooned in size to thousands of people. It grew from a 1994 San Francisco "Santarchy" that satirized Christmas consumerism into bashes in over 300 cities.

As the official NYC SantaCon Web site states, “Santacon is a non-denominational, non-commercial, non-political and non-sensical Santa Claus convention that occurs once a year for absolutely no reason.”

They have to bring at least two non-perishable items, and patronize the bars that have chosen to donate a portion of their Santacon proceeds to Toys for Tots.

On the negative side, New York's is generally the biggest, an has earned an out-of-control reputation with summonses in the past issued for disorderly conduct and other offenses, and online videos of brawling St. Nicks.
