The War in Afghanistan was an armed conflict that took place from 2001 to 2021. It was the longest war in the history of the United States military, lasting longer than the Vietnam War. The war was a response to the September 11 attacks, and involved an international coalition led by the United States. The war had three phases:
01) Toppling the Taliban The first phase lasted two months and involved toppling the Taliban, the political and religious faction that ruled Afghanistan and provided sanctuary for al-Qaeda.
02) Defeating the Taliban
The second phase lasted from 2002 to 2008 and involved defeating the Taliban militarily and rebuilding the Afghan state.
03) The third phase began in 2008 and involved a turn to counterinsurgency doctrine.
