Ethnic pride and tradition in the Year of the Dragon, Chinese Lunar New Year two week celebration in the pan-Asian community.
The performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume. The lion dance is often mistakenly referred to as dragon dance. The difference is that a lion is operated by two people, while a dragon needs many people and in the lion dance, the performers' faces are covered, since they are inside the lion.
The purpose of the lion is to chase evil spirits from the village or building where the dance is held.
