A life-sized bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the 8-foot-high statue is located in Manhattan's Union Square.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Gandhi, as an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, and to later inspire movements for civil rights and freedom.

Gandhi's statements, letters and life have attracted much political and scholarly analysis of his principles, practices and beliefs, including what influenced him.

Although Gandhi was not the originator of the principle of nonviolence, he was the first to apply it in the political field on a large scale. The concept of nonviolence has a long history in Indian religious thought, with it being considered the highest dharma (ethical value virtue), a precept to be observed towards all living beings, at all times, in all respects, in action, words and thought.

Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and .as
