77 year old jazz musician, Giuseppi Logan, sitting on bench in Tompkins Square Park playing jazz on his saxophone.
Beset with personal problems, "Logan vanished from the music scene in the early '70s and for over three decades his whereabouts were unknown."
"My wife had me put in a mental institution," he said. "She said I was an addict." He had taken drugs, anything he could get his hands on". He was away for 30 years and everything he had. "I believe if I had stayed in New York I wouldn't be poor like I am".
Logan is living in New York and performing as a street musician, after years in and out of institutions.
Since March 2009 he has been living at BRC, a nonprofit group for formerly homeless people over age 55, many with severe and persistent mental illness. His ailments have been identified as paranoid schizophrenia and poly substance dependence, though he no longer uses any substance regularly.
In February 2010, he recorded The Giuseppi Logan Quintet, his first album in 43 years.
