Spring Scale Measures Weight. The object to be weighed is suspended from the bottom of a sprint behind the dial: as the spring stretches, it moves the pointer. The elongation of the spring is proportional to the gravitational force on the object: the pointer moves farther for the 17.7 -newton weight (1.8-kg mass) than for the 4.1-newton weight (0.4.2-kg mass).
