Portrait of Tom Ligon recalls 09-11-2001, 20 years later.

"I was exercising on a sun-drenched finger pier downtown at the foot of Canal Street when I heard a strange sound and I turned and looked over my left shoulder and saw an airliner way up the West Side Highway at about 42nd street coming right downtown and I said to myself "Oh, no, too low, too fast," and it was accelerating and passed right by me like I could almost touch it and disappeared into the WTC building and there was only for a split second kind of a whoosh sound and the outline of the plane on the side of the building then a fireball came out and all hell broke loose - smoke, confetti (paper, glass, bodies) filling the sky.

I ran over to a fellow who had been sleeping on one of the benches and asked "Did you see that?" because I couldn't believe my senses and he asked "See what?" It was shortly after the 2nd plane hit and people were streaming uptown along the river where I was that I decided I better get home.

I couldn't ride my bike somehow, so I walked it and as I approached my building the windows to my apartment were wide open and my wife, K.C., was standing in the window, crying, while on the telephone with my mother who lived in Paris and they both had their TV's on watching the same thing and they both knew where I rode my bike on nice mornings."

 • Portrait of Tom Ligon recalls 09-11-2001, 20 years later.

Ligon became one of the most sought after young actors in New York in the 1960s.

Handsome, chameleon character actor and sometimes lead, best known for his performances in Paint Your Wagon (1969), the TV series The Young and the Restless (1973), and Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) in which he also sang the title song. Ligon created the role of Orson in the prize-winning Off-Broadway musical 'Your Own Thing', and starred on Broadway opposite Geraldine Page in "Angela" and with Sandy Duncan in "Love is a Time of Day." While attending St. Alban's School in Washington, DC, he broke his leg playing football, and his interest turned from sports to theater. At Yale, where he graduated as an English major, he was discovered by Tennessee Williams, who saw his performance as Kilroy in Williams' play, "Camino Real."

He and friend Sam Waterston shared a New York City apartment in the early 1960s when they were struggling young actors, splitting rent of $25 a month. Watertson left to get married.
• NYPD Auxiliary force honors fallen officers 11 years after they were tragically gunned down in Greenwich Village.

Tragic death of NYPD Auxiliary officers Eugene Marshalik, 19, and Nicholas Pekearo, 28, were on patrol on March 14, 2007, when they confronted deranged wannabe movie director David Garvin.

Relatives of the officers and scores of auxiliary police officers walked down Bleecker Street, the procession ended at the intersection of Sullivan and Bleecker Sts., where the corner was named after Marshalik and Pekearo.

The deaths of the auxiliary officers 11 years ago stunned the city and led to the purchasing of bullet proof vests for members of the NYPD’s auxiliary — unpaid civilian volunteers who aim to deter crime by acting as the “eyes and ears” of the NYPD and providing a uniformed presence.
