AIDS Memorial & AIDS Virgil Collection
7 galleries
I began the photography for this collection of three gallery from August 2016 to January 2017 at The New York City AIDS Memorial Park at St. Vincent’s Triangle.
The sculpture was being assembled onsite before its opening to the public on WORLD AID DAY December 1, 2016.
"Steel columns for the monument’s 18-foot white canopy sculpture, fabricated in Argentina, was assembled onsite. Stone fabricators in Cold Spring, Minnesota produced the Memorial’s granite pavers, engraved artwork by visual artist Jenny Holzer.
This work includes selections from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself. The Memorial also includes a central granite water fountain feature and benches that serve as the gateway to the new park.
It is located at the across the street from the site of the former St. Vincent’s Hospital, epicenter of the local epidemic, and also a block from the LGBT Community Center where ACT UP and other advocacy organizations first began.
New York City builted "to honor New York City's 100,000+ men, women andchildren who have died from AIDS, and to commemorate and celbrate the efforts of the caregivers and activists."

217 imagesThe parts are greater than the whole, the beauty is that the individual close up of images of lattice sections are far more interesting than the sculpture as a whole. . It's like finding the tree with in the forest. The photographs in this series is the thematic use of looking at the abstract repetition, showing differences in perception of light and shadows across various times of day and types of weather as in Monet's haystack painting. Claude Monet, "the impressionist painter is known for his haystack painting. The underlying theme may be seen as the transience of light. This concept shows nuances of perception as seasons, time of day, and weather changes. The constant subject provided the basis from which comparisons could be made in changes of light across this nuanced series". 20 imagesRemoving Craig's Closet Jim Hodges Sculpture Craig’s closet is a newly created artwork by Jim Hodges. On view beginning June 9, the sculpture was imagined explicitly for the New York City AIDS Memorial Park, which lies in the shadow of the former St. Vincent’s hospital and in proximity to many sites central to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This replica of a domestic bedroom closet, in granite and painted bronze, invites viewers to forge personal connections between complex histories and individual and collective memories. ____________________________________________________
